Volunteers To Be Honored by Board of Supervisors
(Santa Ana) – For 53 years Martin Bentson from Calvary Church in Placentia has volunteered for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in the Correctional Programs Unit. Bentson is one of 11 volunteers who will be recognized by the County of Orange on July 20 at the beginning of the regular Board of Supervisors meeting.

Each honoree has devoted more than 30 years to the Religious and Inspirational Services program for the County. The volunteers provide regularly scheduled worship services, Bible studies and individual pastoral counseling to more than 5,800 inmates in five Orange County jail facilities.

These volunteers often offer the inmates ongoing leadership and religious mentoring after their release. Volunteers inform inmates about assistance programs and services available to them and offer continued guidance.

"The devotion of these volunteers, working in this difficult environment, is exemplary in itself. However, to continue to serve with such passion for so long and continue to do so is extraordinary," said correctional programs manager Susan Bellonzi. "The fact that these volunteers regularly sacrifice their own personal time to provide hope to troubled inmates is a major factor in their success. The inmates realize that the volunteers have put the inmates’ needs before their own. This establishes the trust necessary for the healing process to begin."

The Board of Supervisors meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Board Room located at the Hall of Administration, 10 Civic Center Plaza in Santa Ana.
