The Marshals
Department also provides the Judges with threat
assessment and special security. The Judicial
Protection Unit (JPU) will assess threat information
to determine the potential danger and, if necessary,
provide appropriate protective services.
Another of the
important duties of the Marshal is to bring people to
court who are subjects of conservatee hearings. These
people are institutionalized in mental hospitals
throughout the State and must be transported to court
for their hearings. Last year this detail transported
over 1,445 conservatees to court, logging 61,540
miles.
The Department
performs required background investigations on
applicants for service in the Orange County Grand
Jury. Each year, this detail performs background
investigations on approximately 90 potential
applicants.
