Volunteer Opportunities
Position Title: Conflict Mediation Volunteer

Functions of Agency/Department:
The Orange County Human Relations Commission and Council provide programs to foster mutual understanding and respect among residents in order to make Orange County a better place for ALL people to live, work and do business. Volunteer Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Perform casework as a mediator in a court-based office (small claims, debt collection and unlawful detainers) and/or with community disputes (landlord/tenant, neighbor/neighbor, consumer/merchant, employer/employee, etc.)
  • Assist with mediation trainings and presentations
  • Assist with community outreach
  • Help coordinate and manage volunteer program
  • Assist with grant-related documentation and record keeping
Skills, Training or Qualifications:
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) language skills are highly desirable
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals in a diplomatic and non-biased manner
  • An interest and/or skills in mediation
Volunteers working in a human relations environment are expected to deal tactfully and respectfully with sensitive issues involving divergent viewpoints and cultures.

Time Commitment:
Volunteers are required to schedule approximately 8 hours per week for a minimum of 120 hours. Hours may be scheduled Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. A 3- to 4-hour shift may be scheduled during mornings or afternoons.
In addition to the required hours mentioned above, volunteers must complete a 32-hour mediation certification training (unless already trained).
