Student Internships
Position Description:
Position Title: Legal Assistant/Law Clerk with the District Attorney’s Office (unpaid internship)

Post bar law clerks will not be considered for this position.


Name and Location of Agency/Department Requesting Intern:
Orange County District Attorney’s Office
Offices located in Fullerton, Santa Ana, Orange, Westminster, Newport Beach and Laguna Niguel.

Functions of Agency/Department:
The Office of the District Attorney represents the People of the State of California in some civil and in all criminal proceedings. The mission of the Office of the District Attorney is to enhance public safety and welfare and create a sense of security in the community through vigorous enforcement of criminal and civil laws in a just, honest, efficient and ethical manner. Intern Duties/Responsibilities:
Duties will vary depending upon qualifications and academic level of the applicant.

Educational Requirements:
Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college or university, majoring in Law, Criminal Justice, Paralegal Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Social Ecology or related fields. Recent graduates will be considered.

Skills, Training or Qualifications:
Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and use good judgment. Ability to carry out projects and responsibilities to completion. Good computer skills.

Time Commitment:
Between 12 - 20 hours per week for 3 - 6 months. Hours must be scheduled during regular business hours (Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.). Summer internships are available. Applicants willing to work additional hours typically gain a more in-depth experience.

Although the position is unpaid, it is an excellent opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain knowledge in the fields of criminal and civil law, and insight into the internal workings of law enforcement and the California justice system. This is a great opportunity to enhance skills, build resumes and explore career options.

Internships and Law Clerk positions with the District Attorney’s Office require a high degree of confidentiality and discretion due to the sensitivity of the cases.

Applicants will be interviewed and asked to provide a copy of their driver’s license and social security card. Applicants must pass a background investigation to the satisfaction of the agency prior to placement. Background investigations require from one to four weeks to process.
