NEW CITIZEN VOTING

A new citizen, for voting purposes, is any citizen who meets all requirements of an elector of, and has established residence in, the state of California, except that he or she became a United States citizen (completed the swearing in ceremony) after the 15th day prior to an election but on or before the 7th day prior to that election.

To vote under the new citizen procedures you must do so in the office of the Registrar of Voters. You will be required to show proof of citizenship and declare that you are a California resident. You will then be registered for future elections and you will be given a ballot for the current election.

To vote under these provisions for the March 2nd, 2004 Primary election, you must complete the swearing in ceremony between February 18th, 2004 and February 24th, 2004, and go to the Registrar of Voters office to register and vote.

ANYONE WHO BECOMES A CITIZEN ON OR BEFORE THE 15-DAY CLOSE OF REGISTRATION (February 17th, 2004) MUST FOLLOW THE REGULAR PROCEDURES FOR REGISTERING TO VOTE.
