Orange County's
New Voting System
Background Information and
Implementation |
 |
Rodermund have set a goal for this community
outreach campaign of ensuring that Orange County voters will be
familiar and comfortable with the voting equipment before they
encounter it in the polling place.
· The new voting system is accurate, secure, and private.
· The eSlate device is about the size of a legal pad
and weighs just 5.2 pounds. The voter uses a rotary wheel to
navigate through the ballot and an ENTER button to make his/her
choice. This rotary interface was chosen because it is more
accurate and durable than touch-screen systems.
· The new system is user-friendly. The voter can view
or listen to the ballot in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese,
or Korean as required by federal law. The system has the capacity
to add up to five additional languages should they be required
in the future. The eSlate provides greater ease of use and privacy
for people with disabilities and can even accommodate breath
control - "sip and puff" - users. The system also
includes an audio ballot reader for people who are blind, visually
impaired or literacy-challenged.
